Hong Kong SAR [香港特別行政区]、ノルウェーの研究ともに、新型インフルエンザウイルスの血球凝集素(HA)蛋白のD222G置換(変異)の存在と病気重症度との間に良い相関がある (Eurosurveillance Vol 15, Issue 14)。この変異により、呼吸器系のウイルス結合レセプターが sialic acid-alpha2,6-galactose (alpha2,6 receptors [上気道の細胞に優勢])から alpha2,3 receptors[下気道の細胞に優勢]/alpha2,6 receptors 両レセプターにシフトすることで、病気重症度に影響を与える可能性を示唆。]
